Golden Retriever puppy starter checklist
A Golden Retriever puppy is one of the most rewarding β and busiest β additions to a UAE home. Friendly, clever and eager to please, Goldens are wonderful family dogs, but they grow fast, shed a lot and need plenty of exercise and training. Here is everything to have ready before your puppy arrives:
- Food: a large-breed puppy formula, plus bowls
- Sleep & safety: a crate and a comfortable bed
- Walks: a collar, harness, lead and ID tag
- Grooming: a brush and de-shedding tool for that thick coat
- Play & training: chew toys, enrichment toys and training treats
- Health: a first vet visit for vaccinations, microchip and parasite control
Feeding a Golden Retriever puppy
Goldens are a large breed, and growing too fast can stress developing joints β so feed a large-breed puppy formula designed for controlled, steady growth, not a generic puppy food. Follow the pack's feeding guide for your puppy's weight and split it into meals.
- Under 4 months: three to four small meals a day.
- 4β6 months: around three meals a day.
- 6β12 months: two to three meals, staying on puppy food until roughly 12β18 months for a large breed.

Overfeeding a large-breed puppy can harm joint development. Feed to a lean, healthy body condition rather than free-feeding, and check the growth chart with your vet.
Setting up: crate, bed and gear
A calm, safe space helps a new puppy settle and speeds up toilet training. A crate sized for an adult Golden (with a divider while they grow) becomes their den, and a supportive dog bed gives them somewhere comfortable to rest. Add a collar, lead and ID tag from our collars, leashes & harnesses range so they are ready for walks and identifiable from day one.
Training, exercise and socialisation
Goldens are highly trainable and love to work for rewards β start basic training and gentle, positive socialisation early, exposing your puppy to new people, sounds and (vaccinated) settings. Balance is key on exercise: they are energetic, but a growing puppy's joints need controlled activity, not marathon runs.
- Short, frequent play and training sessions using training treats.
- Chew and enrichment toys to satisfy their need to carry and chew.
- Reward-based toilet and crate training for a smooth start.
Grooming that famous coat
Golden Retrievers have a water-repellent double coat and they shed β a lot, especially seasonally. Start a grooming routine while they are young so they enjoy it: brush a few times a week (daily during heavy sheds), bathe every few weeks, and keep ears, nails and teeth on a schedule. Never shave the double coat β it protects against both heat and sun.
Find brushes, de-shedding tools and shampoo in our dog grooming collection.
Keeping a puppy safe in the UAE heat
The double coat plus a UAE summer means heat management is essential for a Golden puppy:
- Walk in the early morning or late evening, never in the midday heat.
- Do the seven-second pavement test β if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws.
- Always carry water and watch for heavy panting, drooling or lethargy.
- Brush out the loose undercoat to help them stay cool, but never shave it.
Even a few minutes in a parked car in the UAE can be fatal. Signs of heatstroke β heavy panting, drooling, collapse β are an emergency; move your puppy somewhere cool and call your vet immediately.
Health and your first vet visit
Book a vet check soon after your puppy arrives to set up vaccinations, deworming, parasite control and microchipping. Golden Retrievers are prone to a few inherited conditions, so a responsible breeder is key:
- Joints: hip and elbow dysplasia β ask the breeder for parental screening scores.
- Eyes and heart: ask about eye testing and heart checks in the breeding lines.
- Weight: Goldens love food and gain weight easily β keep them lean lifelong.
Frequently asked questions
What should I feed a Golden Retriever puppy?
Feed a large-breed puppy formula designed for controlled growth, which protects developing joints, split into three to four meals a day when young and reducing to two to three as they grow. Stay on puppy food until roughly 12 to 18 months for this large breed.
How much exercise does a Golden Retriever puppy need?
Little and often. Puppies are energetic but their joints are still developing, so favour short, frequent play and gentle walks over long or high-impact exercise. A common guide is about five minutes of walk per month of age, twice a day, adjusted to your puppy.
Do Golden Retrievers cope with the UAE heat?
Yes, with care. Keep them in air-conditioned comfort, walk only in the cool early morning or late evening, always carry water, and never shave the double coat β brush out the undercoat instead. Watch closely for signs of overheating.
Do Golden Retriever puppies shed a lot?
Yes. Goldens have a thick double coat and shed year-round, with heavier seasonal moults. Regular brushing a few times a week, and daily during big sheds, keeps loose hair and matting under control.
