Purina Pro Plan is the brand vets tend to name when asked what they feed their own animals. It is developed by a team of more than 500 nutritionists, veterinarians and behaviourists, and much of what appears in the range started as published research rather than a marketing idea.

This is the most genuinely novel product in pet food, and it is worth understanding properly.
People are not allergic to cat hair. They react to Fel d 1, a protein cats produce in their saliva and spread onto their coat when grooming. Every cat makes it, including hairless breeds, which is why brushing and cleaning help so little.
LiveClear takes a different approach: a specific egg protein in the kibble binds to Fel d 1 in the cat's mouth and neutralises it before grooming spreads it around. Purina's published work reports an average 47% reduction in allergen on the coat from the third week of feeding.
Be clear about what that is and is not. It reduces allergen; it does not cure an allergy, and it is not a substitute for medical advice. But for a household where someone reacts mildly to the cat, it can be the difference between coping and rehoming.
Most pet probiotics are sold on general claims. These two are strain-specific.
FortiFlora is the probiotic most commonly dispensed by vets for loose stools and digestive upset — after antibiotics, during a diet change, or through a stressful period like boarding or moving.
Calming Care uses a different strain studied specifically for anxious behaviour. Dogs and cats showing anxious behaviours — pacing, hiding, jumping at noise — were reported to display them less after daily feeding. The gut-brain axis is real, and this is one of the few pet products actually built on it.
A chihuahua and a great dane are the same species with almost nothing else in common nutritionally. Small breeds have fast metabolisms and tiny stomachs and need energy-dense food in small kibble. Large breeds grow for up to two years, and growing them too fast damages developing joints, so large-breed puppy food is deliberately controlled in calcium and energy.
Pro Plan splits its range accordingly: Small & Mini, Medium, Large Athletic and Large Robust — the last two distinguishing lean, muscular builds from heavier-framed dogs.
Worth saying plainly. Cats descend from desert animals and have a weak thirst drive — they evolved to take most of their water from prey, which is around 70% water. A cat fed only dry food does not drink enough to make up the difference and lives in mild chronic dehydration.
Over years that is a recognised risk factor for the urinary and kidney disease that sends so many cats to the vet. Even swapping one meal a day to wet food makes a measurable difference.
Move across gradually over 7 to 10 days, mixing an increasing proportion of the new food into the old. Cats especially resist sudden change, and a cat that stops eating entirely for more than a day or two is at real risk of hepatic lipidosis — so never force a switch by simply removing the old food.
