Good To Know

• Scoop daily and wash the box out with warm soapy water when you change the litter. Skip bleach, pine and citrus cleaners - the smell puts many cats off.
• One tray per cat plus a spare is the usual guide in a multi-cat home.
• Put the tray somewhere quiet, away from food and water and away from the washing machine.
• Top-entry and hooded boxes don't suit every cat. Kittens, older cats and cats with stiff joints may need an open low-sided tray.
• If you are pregnant or your immune system is weakened, ask someone else to clean the tray, or wear gloves and wash your hands afterwards.
• Straining in the litter tray, crying or passing little or no urine is an emergency in cats, especially males - see a vet straight away.
