The Dayang Hamster Cage is the tallest cage in Dayang's hamster range - a multi-level wire cage on a deep plastic base, with platforms, ramps and external tubes.
Key Features
- The largest floor plan in the Dayang hamster range at 55 x 30.2 cm.
- Several levels connected by ramps and tubes, so a small rodent can climb as well as run.
- Deep plastic base holds a reasonable depth of bedding before it spills.
- 70 cm tall, which suits gerbils and mice better than it suits a Syrian hamster.
- Wire top and side doors for access at every level.
Good To Know
- Floor area is about 1661 sq cm. Current welfare guidance puts the minimum unbroken floor for a Syrian hamster at around 4,000 sq cm, and tubes, shelves and upper storeys do not count towards it.
- Hamsters burrow. Give at least 15 to 20 cm of bedding depth in part of the enclosure. A hamster with nowhere to dig bar-chews instead, and bar-chewing is a sign of stress rather than boredom.
- Check the wheel. A Syrian hamster needs one of about 28 cm across or its back stays arched as it runs, and a dwarf needs about 20 cm. The wheel supplied with a cage this size is usually smaller than that and is worth replacing.
- Height is a mixed blessing for hamsters. A Syrian that falls from an upper platform onto a hard base can be badly hurt - gerbils and mice climb far more confidently.
- Syrian hamsters live alone. Two in one cage will fight, often fatally, however well they got on as babies. Only some dwarf species tolerate company, and even then not reliably.
- Hamsters are heat-sensitive. Above about 24 C a Syrian can drop into a torpor that looks like death. Keep the cage out of direct sun and away from a window in summer.
- Small rodents hide illness. A wet tail, laboured breathing, a wet chin, sudden weight loss or a hamster that stays shut in its house all day needs a vet who sees exotics, quickly.
