Georplast

Georplast is an Italian manufacturer founded in 1970 at Mezzago, just outside Milan. They injection-mould their own plastic rather than buying it in, and the whole pet range is made in Italy and designed with an Italian studio - which is why it looks less utilitarian than most of this category.

Litter Trays, By Size

Junior 38x28cm and the Kitten Welcome Kit tray at 37x27cm - kitten sizes with low sides
Max 43.5x34cm and Shuttle 45cm - the standard adult sizes
Big 50x40cm, Jumbo 54x40cm and Shuttle 57cm - for large cats and multi-cat homes
Shuttle Corner at 49cm and 58cm - triangular, for tucking into a corner
All of these have a clip-on rim that catches kicked litter and detaches so you can tip the tray straight into the bin

High-Sided And Covered

Sonic Medium 18.5cm walls, Sonic Large 24cm, Colosseo 30cm - open at the top, for cats that stand to urinate or dig hard
Galaxy Jumbo - fully covered with a carbon filter in the lid
Roto-Toilet - covered with an unusually tall 40cm hood, so a big cat can stand up inside
High sides are harder to climb into. For a kitten, a senior with stiff joints or a cat recovering from surgery, pick a low-sided tray instead

How To Size A Tray

About one and a half times the length of your cat, nose to the base of the tail. Most trays sold are too small, and a cat that cannot turn comfortably starts going over the edge
One tray per cat plus one spare, somewhere quiet with an escape route, away from food bowls
Scoop daily. No tray design substitutes for that
Wash with hot water and unscented detergent - never anything containing ammonia, which smells like urine to a cat

The Rest Of The Range

Carriers - Panzer, Rhino and Rocket, all rated to 10kg, which covers any cat and a small dog
Bowls - a corner bowl in two sizes, Soft Touch double bowls in plastic or stainless steel, and an 8L gravity dispenser
Mats - rubber litter mats in two sizes, and feeding placemats round or rectangular
Beds - the Duck covered bed, which splits into two open beds, and a version with a clear hood
Scratchers and toys - cardboard pads, and track toys with captive balls that cannot be lost or swallowed

Good To Know

Plastic wears out. Once a tray or a bowl is visibly scratched, those scratches hold bacteria and odour that washing will not shift - replace rather than scrub harder
Plastic bowls are the classic trigger for feline acne. If your cat has blackheads or spots on the chin, move to the stainless steel version
Cat faeces can carry toxoplasmosis. Anyone pregnant or immunosuppressed should avoid handling the tray, and everyone should wash their hands afterwards
A cat straining, going more often, passing blood or suddenly avoiding the tray needs a vet rather than a new tray. Urinary blockage in male cats is an emergency
