External canister filters with a UV steriliser built inline, which reduces the free-swimming algae that turns water green. Four sizes, and the deciding factor is tank volume rather than flow rate on its own.

Built for planted tanks, with the CO2 mixing system integrated into the canister so you do not need a separate inline reactor. Three flow rates, each available with a standard common primer or a stronger fast start-up primer: 950 L/h for tanks to 90 L, 1200 L/h to 120 L, and 1450 L/h to 140 L. All include a heater compartment that takes a 22–24 mm heater. The CO2 cylinder is sold separately.
Submersible units that sit inside the tank with no hoses and no priming. The Dophin 980F handles tanks to 300 L at 1550 L/h; the FC-601 is a slim 6.5 cm design for tanks where interior space is tight; and the Dophin KF, Atlas AT and Astro AS cover small to medium setups. The Dophin Hang On Back filter mounts on the rim instead, keeping the inside of the tank completely clear.
Start with the volume of your tank, then decide on the type. A canister suits larger or planted tanks and keeps all the hardware outside the display. An internal filter is cheaper, simpler and needs no priming, but takes up space in the tank. A hang-on-back filter sits between the two. As a rule of thumb, aim to turn over the tank volume several times an hour, and size up rather than down if you keep messy fish or a heavily stocked tank.
