A Hide Is Not Decoration

This is worth stating plainly, because it is the most commonly skipped part of a reptile setup.

Reptiles and amphibians are prey animals as well as predators, and an animal with nowhere to conceal itself lives under constant low-grade stress. Stressed reptiles eat less, shed badly and become more prone to illness — and a keeper who cannot see their animal because it is hiding often concludes it does not need a hide, which is precisely backwards. A secure hide makes a reptile more confident and more visible over time, not less.

Ideally give an animal at least two hides — one at the warm end and one at the cool end — so it never has to choose between feeling safe and being the right temperature.
