The FOFOS Tuff Gear Driveshaft Rope Dog Toy is the heavy end of the FOFOS range. A dense TPR shaft on a rope handle, so you can swing it, throw it further than the rubber alone would go, and tug without your hand near the teeth.
Key Features
- High-density TPR body from the Tuff Gear line, FOFOS's toughest
- Rope handle lets you throw it a long way and tug at arm's length
- Ridged shaft for grip in the mouth
- Heavy enough to hold a strong dog's interest
Playing Tug Properly
- Tug is one of the better games you can play with a dog. It burns energy, it is co-operative, and letting the dog win does not make them dominant
- Keep the pulling side to side rather than up and down, and let the dog do the bracing. Lifting a dog off its front feet puts the strain through the neck
- Teach a swap. Offer a treat, say the cue, and hand the toy straight back. A dog that will let go on command can be given far more freedom with toys
- Stop the game if teeth touch skin, and start again after a short pause. That is the whole rule, and it is the one worth being consistent about
Checking It
- The join between rope and rubber is the part that fails first. Look at it every few sessions
- Once the rope starts to pull out of the body, the toy is finished - a loose rope with a heavy weight on the end is not something to leave with a dog
- Bin a rope toy once it frays badly. Swallowed strands can gather in the gut and are one of the harder foreign bodies to pass
Good To Know
- Thermoplastic rubber (TPR) is soft enough to give under the teeth and firm enough to hold its shape
- High-density TPR is tough, but nothing is chew-proof. Check it and replace it when the surface splits
- Supervise play and take the toy away once it starts to come apart. No dog toy is indestructible, and swallowed pieces can cause a blockage
