• Wash it every day. Seed husk, soaked pellet and fresh fruit left in a warm bowl grow mould fast, and aspergillosis from mouldy food is one of the commonest killers of caged birds in this climate.
• Mount food and water where nothing can perch above them.
• Check the lock every time you refill. A parrot that learns to release the bracket will drop the bowl, and a bird left without water in UAE heat is in trouble within hours.
• Run two bowls rather than one - food and water separately, plus a spare so there is always a clean dry one ready.
• Watch what actually goes in against what comes back out as husk. A bird that looks like it is eating may only be husking, and sudden weight loss or fewer droppings needs a vet.
• A bird that stops playing, sits fluffed on the cage floor or goes quiet is showing the first signs of illness - birds hide sickness until they can no longer manage it. That is an urgent avian vet visit, not a wait-and-see.
