• Fresh food spoils fast in UAE heat. Load the skewer in the morning and take out whatever is left after about four hours.
• Never skewer avocado, onion, garlic or chocolate - all are toxic to birds. Core apples and pears first, because the seeds contain cyanide compounds.
• The rod has a point. Fit it low enough that a bird cannot fall onto it from a perch above, and check the base is tight each time you refill.
• A bird that stops playing, sits fluffed on the cage floor or goes quiet is showing the first signs of illness - birds hide sickness until they can no longer manage it. That is an urgent avian vet visit, not a wait-and-see.
