• Fabric huts are one of the few bird products many avian vets actively warn about. Birds chew and swallow the fibre, which can impact the crop, and toes, beaks and claws catch in loose threads. If you use one, check it daily, trim every loose thread, and take it out the moment the lining is breached or the bird starts eating it rather than sleeping in it.
• A dark enclosed cavity reads as a nest site to a mature bird. Huts commonly set off hormonal behaviour - territorial defence of the hut, regurgitating, and in hens chronic egg-laying. If any of that starts, the hut comes out.
• Wash it gently and dry it right through. Damp fabric in a warm cage grows mould, and aspergillosis is a serious risk to birds.
• A bird that suddenly spends all day in the hut is not necessarily content. Sick birds hide. Take it as a reason to look more closely, not to relax.
• A bird that stops playing, sits fluffed on the cage floor or goes quiet is showing the first signs of illness - birds hide sickness until they can no longer manage it. That is an urgent avian vet visit, not a wait-and-see.
