Intersand OdourLock Lavender Multi-Cat Clumping Cat Litter is an ultra-premium clumping litter made from sodium bentonite, a natural clay Intersand takes from mines in Wyoming. It is a multi-cat formula, the lavender fragrance only releases when it meets liquid, and Intersand prints a 40-day no odour guarantee on the bag. It comes in 6kg and 12kg.
Key Features
-
Extra-hard clumping: Intersand says the clay absorbs up to six times its weight in liquid, which makes small, firm clumps that lift out whole instead of breaking up on the scoop.
-
40-day odour guarantee: printed on the bag. The patented formula is aimed at stopping ammonia forming rather than masking it once it has.
-
Multi-cat formula: made for a tray in heavier use than a single cat gives it.
-
Fragrance on contact: the lavender is moisture-activated, so the bag does not scent the room, only the tray when it is used.
-
Low dust: the bag is marked dust-free. All clay litter throws up some dust, so pour it slowly and it stays close to that.
-
Goes further: because the clumps are tight there is less waste, and Intersand claims the litter used across a year can fall by as much as 45%.
-
Two bag sizes: 6kg for one cat, or 12kg with a carry handle for a household with more than one.
Getting The Best From It
- Fill the tray to about 7 to 10cm. Clumping litter needs that depth to form a clump that lifts off the base cleanly instead of sticking to it.
- Scoop at least once a day and top the tray back up. The 40-day figure assumes the clumps are being taken out, not left in.
- Empty the tray out completely and wash it from time to time anyway, however well the litter is holding up.
- Switching brands is best done over a week or so, mixing the new litter into the old. A cat that finds a completely different surface one morning may go elsewhere.
Good To Know
- Clumping clay is not the right litter for a very young kitten. A kitten that still mouths everything can swallow it, and it clumps just as readily inside as it does in the tray. Use a non-clumping litter until yours is using the tray properly and leaving the contents alone.
- Never flush clumping litter. It sets hard and will block a drain. It goes in the bin.
- Fragrance does not suit every cat. If yours starts going outside the tray after a change, try the unscented OdourLock before assuming the tray is in the wrong place.
- Pour it slowly and keep your face back from the bag. Even a low-dust clay raises some, which is worth care if anyone in the house has asthma.
- Bentonite is a mined clay, not a plant-based material, so it is not biodegradable. If that matters to you, Intersand's corn-based Ecolife litter is the line to look for.
- Whoever cleans the tray should wash their hands afterwards. Pregnant women are usually advised to hand the job over or wear gloves, because of toxoplasmosis.
