If you are setting up your first enclosure, these are the points that determine whether an animal thrives or slowly declines. They are also the three most commonly got wrong.
Reptiles manufacture vitamin D3 in their skin using UVB light, and without D3 they cannot absorb dietary calcium — no matter how much calcium you dust onto their food. The result is metabolic bone disease: soft, deforming bones, tremors, a rubbery jaw, and eventually death. It is one of the most common illnesses in captive reptiles and almost entirely preventable.
Two things people get wrong. Glass and plastic block UVB, so a sunny window does nothing and a bulb outside a glass lid does nothing. And UVB output fades long before the bulb stops giving light — a fluorescent that still looks bright can be producing almost none, which is why they are replaced every six months. Write the fitting date on the bulb.
Reptiles cannot generate their own body heat. They regulate it by moving between warm and cool areas, and that process drives digestion and immune function — a reptile kept too cool stops digesting properly and can develop gut impaction with food still inside it.
So an enclosure needs a genuinely hot basking spot at one end and a genuinely cool retreat at the other. This is the main reason enclosure size matters: a small box heated by any real basking lamp becomes uniformly hot, with nowhere to escape to.
Measure the basking surface with an infrared thermometer, not the air. A surface under a lamp can be far hotter than the air above it, and that gap is how reptiles get burned in setups the keeper believed were correct.
Reptiles and amphibians are prey as well as predators. Without a secure retreat they live under constant low-grade stress, which shows up as reduced appetite, poor shedding and greater susceptibility to illness.
Keepers who cannot see their animal often conclude it does not need a hide. It is precisely backwards — an animal that knows it can retreat becomes more confident and more visible over time. Give it two: one at the warm end and one at the cool end, so it never has to choose between feeling safe and being the right temperature.
Any particulate substrate can be swallowed with food and cause gut impaction, which is serious and sometimes fatal. Feed in a dish, or move the animal to a separate feeding container. A reptile that stops passing droppings, goes off food or strains without result needs a vet promptly.
