The Exo Terra UVB 200 is the strongest compact UVB bulb in the Exo Terra range, made for reptiles with very high UV requirements and for enclosures where the bulb has to work at a distance.

When You Need This Rather Than the UVB 150

Two situations. The first is a species with genuinely extreme UV demands — uromastyx and some agamids sit at the top of that scale. The second is simple geometry: UV intensity falls off sharply with distance, so in a tall terrarium where the basking branch sits well below the lid, a bulb that would be ample in a low enclosure may deliver very little where the animal actually sits.

If your setup is standard height and your species is not an extreme case, the UVB 150 is usually the better choice. Too much UV is not harmless.

Why UVB Is Not Optional

Reptiles use UVB to manufacture vitamin D3 in their skin, and without D3 they cannot absorb dietary calcium — no matter how much calcium you dust onto their food. The result of getting this wrong is metabolic bone disease: soft, deforming bones, tremors, a rubbery jaw, and eventually death.

Note that glass and plastic block UVB. A window will not do it, and a bulb mounted outside a glass lid is doing nothing at all.

Setting It Up

• Mount inside the enclosure, or above a mesh top.
• Always provide shade. With a bulb this strong it matters more, not less — a reptile must be able to move out of the UV when it has had enough.
• Fluorescent bulbs do not provide meaningful heat. You still need a separate basking lamp.

Replacement

Replace every 6 months. UVB output falls away long before the bulb stops giving visible light. Write the fitting date on the base of the bulb.

Safety

• Do not look directly into the bulb.
• Always provide a shaded area so your reptile can move out of the UV.
• Let the bulb cool completely before handling.
