Description

The FARMA Breeding Pigeon Diet is a twenty-three variety grain mix for the breeding season — the point in the year when a pair is producing crop milk for squabs and needs more protein than a maintenance ration gives.

Key Features

  • Twenty-three seed varieties, including buckwheat, canary seed, wheat, corn and the millets
  • FARMA rates it for breeding pairs and for young birds still growing
  • The legume and pulse content carries the protein that crop milk and feather growth draw on
  • 20 kg sack
  • Made in Greece by Farma Friends, a pet-food maker near Thessaloniki that has been blending seed since 1997

Feeding

  • Move pairs onto the breeding mix a couple of weeks before you pair up, not on the day the first egg appears
  • A pair rearing two squabs can eat close to double what a resting bird does. Do not ration them now
  • Calcium and grit are critical through lay. A hen short of calcium draws it out of her own skeleton

Good To Know

  • Breeding feed given to birds that are not breeding just puts weight on. Move the loft back to a maintenance mix once the youngsters are weaned
  • Soft-shelled eggs, a hen that goes down after laying, or splay-legged squabs point to a calcium or management problem worth a vet's opinion
  • Mouldy grain is dangerous to any pigeon and especially to squabs. Keep the sack sealed, cool and off the floor
  • The published ingredient list names some of the twenty-three varieties rather than all of them. The sack carries the full declaration
