Gnawlers Smooth & Creamy Lickable Cat Treats come as single-serve tubes of a wet, creamy paste you squeeze out and let your cat lick, usually straight from the tube while you hold it. At up to 90% moisture they are as much a way of getting water into a cat as they are a treat.

A cat living on dry food often runs mildly dehydrated without ever looking thirsty, and low water intake is one of the things linked to urinary and kidney trouble later on. What Is In It

• Fish or meat first, depending on the flavour, in a potato starch and konjac gum base that gives it the creamy texture.
• Taurine, an amino acid cats cannot make enough of themselves. Gnawlers add it for eye and brain health, which is what taurine is genuinely needed for.
• Green tea extract, which Gnawlers include for digestion and immune support.
• Brewers' yeast, a common palatability ingredient.
• Gluten-free, with no artificial preservatives, per Gnawlers.

How To Serve It

• Tear the top off the tube and squeeze it straight out -- most cats will take it from the tube while you hold it, which is half the appeal.
• Or squeeze it into a bowl, or over the top of their usual food.
• It is a good way to get a reluctant cat to start eating, or to hide a powdered supplement.
• Use one tube at a time and throw away what is left. It is wet food, so it does not keep once it is open.

Gnawlers is a brand of Foshan Phoenix Pet Products Co. Ltd, a Chinese pet chew and treat manufacturer founded in 2002 and based in Foshan, Guangdong. Gnawlers say the plant runs to 30,000 square metres and that they export to more than 50 countries.

Good To Know

• Gnawlers say these are not suitable for kittens under six months. Their crunchy treats say three months, so the two ranges differ -- go by the pack in front of you.
• One or two tubes a day, per Gnawlers.
• This is a complementary treat, not a complete food. Whatever the flavour, your cat's actual meals still have to do the nutritional work.
• Use a tube in one go and throw away what is left. It is wet food and it will not keep.
• Chicken and liver is out of stock at the time of writing; the other four flavours are available.
• Introduce it gradually. A new treat on top of a full day's food is the usual cause of a loose stool, and that is not the same as an intolerance.
• If your pet is already overweight, or on a diet your vet has set, count these in and take the equivalent out of their meals rather than adding them on top.
• Keep fresh drinking water available.
