Cool Cat

Cool Cat sells the Cool Clean range of clumping bentonite cat litter. Bentonite is the clay that swells and seals around liquid, so waste comes out in one solid piece and the rest of the tray stays usable - which is why clumping litter is the default choice for most cat owners.

The Range

One litter in four scents: apple, lavender, lemon and coffee, each in its own colour of bag.
Three sizes: 5 kg and 10 kg foil bags, and a 20 kg woven sack.
The pack claims 99% dust free, quick water absorption, fast clumping and effective odour control.

Good To Know

Never flush clumping clay litter. Bentonite is designed to swell and set hard in water, which is the last thing you want in a drain or septic tank.
Scented litter does not suit every cat. A fragrance that smells pleasant to you can be the reason a cat starts going beside the tray instead of in it. Choose unscented for a fussy cat, or one with asthma or any breathing problem.
Clumping clay is not the usual choice for young kittens. Kittens under about four months explore by mouth and bentonite swells on contact with liquid, so most vets suggest a non-clumping litter until they stop tasting things.
Fill the tray 5 to 7 cm deep. Any shallower and clumps stick to the base instead of lifting out cleanly.
Scoop at least daily, top up as you go, and empty and wash the whole tray every two to four weeks.
Watch the clumps. A sudden increase in the size or number of urine clumps is often the first sign of diabetes or kidney disease - the main practical advantage clumping litter has over crystal or paper.
Change litter brands gradually, mixing the new in with the old over a week.
One litter tray per cat plus one spare, in separate places.
If you are pregnant, ask someone else to change the tray, or wear gloves and wash your hands - the standard toxoplasmosis precaution for any cat litter.
Straining in the tray, crying, or passing little or no urine is an emergency in cats, especially males. See a vet straight away.
