FidoVet

FidoVet makes gelato for dogs, in Italy. The product is a 40 g tub of powder: add water to the line marked on the tub, seal it, shake for half a minute and put it in the freezer for three hours. Three hours later there is about 110 g of soft gelato, in the tub you made it in.

The six flavours

Vanilla — the mildest, and the leanest at 1% fat. The one to start with
Banana, Apple, Pineapple, Strawberry and Raspberry — each with freeze-dried fruit powder at 0.5%

Why the powder format works

Nothing needs refrigerating until you make it. The tubs keep in a cupboard, and FidoVet gives the powder a two-year shelf life
You make one portion at a time, so nothing sits half-eaten in the freezer
The tub is the mixing vessel and the serving dish — there is nothing else to wash

Before you buy

This is a dessert. Fructose is the first ingredient, and it contains milk powders and wheat flour
FidoVet's daily guide is 60 g for a small dog, 120 g for a medium one and 180 g for a large one. Take those calories off the main meal
Try a small amount first if your dog has ever reacted to dairy
Never substitute human ice cream. Some contain xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs
