Frontline
Frontline is the Boehringer Ingelheim fipronil range, and the spot-on most vets in the region still treat as the baseline for fleas and ticks. Everything here is sold without a prescription.
What Is In The Range
Combo spot-on pipettes pair fipronil, which kills adult fleas, ticks and biting lice on contact, with (S)-methoprene, which stops the eggs and larvae your pet sheds from ever hatching. That second ingredient is what breaks the cycle in your house
The pump spray is fipronil on its own, dosed by weight rather than by pipette, and it is the only Frontline presentation licensed from two days of age
None of it is absorbed into the bloodstream. It spreads across the skin surface, so a flea or tick does not have to bite to be killed
Choosing The Right Pack For A Dog
Weigh the dog first. Underdosing is the usual reason a spot-on seems not to work
S covers 2 to 10 kg, M covers over 10 up to 20 kg, and L covers over 20 up to 40 kg. Each box holds three pipettes
For a dog over 40 kg, ask us about the XL rather than combining two smaller pipettes without advice
Cats And Ferrets
Cats take a single 0.5 ml pipette whatever they weigh, from 8 weeks old and 1 kg
The same pipette covers ferrets from six months old
Never use a dog pipette on a cat. The dog packs hold several times the volume
How Often To Apply It
On dogs, flea cover runs eight weeks but tick cover only about four. If ticks are your real concern, treat monthly rather than stretching to eight weeks
On cats, adult fleas keep dying for about four weeks while the egg-sterilising effect lasts six. Monthly is the sensible rhythm
The spray gives up to three months against fleas on dogs, two on cats, and about a month against ticks on either
Getting Rid Of Fleas Properly
Treat every cat and dog in the home on the same day. One untreated pet keeps the whole house reinfested, and it is the commonest reason a treatment looks like it has failed
Vacuum thoroughly and wash bedding at 60C or hotter. Most of a flea population is eggs, larvae and pupae in the carpet rather than adults on the pet
Expect to keep seeing the odd flea for two or three weeks while pupae hatch out and get caught
Good To Know
Never use any fipronil product on a rabbit. It can cause severe reactions, including death, and the same caution applies to guinea pigs and other small pets
Flammable, and an irritant to skin and eyes. Wash your hands afterwards, keep children away from the site until it is dry, and keep treated pets away from flames and heaters
Harmful to aquatic life - no swimming in open water for two days after treatment
Sold without a prescription, but these are still veterinary medicines. Read the pack leaflet, and if the itching does not settle get a vet to look rather than repeating treatments
