Geohellas

Geohellas is a Greek technical clays company sitting on one of the largest attapulgite and bentonite deposits in Europe. Cat Leader is their own retail litter brand, launched in 2008 and sold through pet shops and vets in more than fifteen countries - which means the mineral in the bag is clay they mine and process themselves.

Four Different Materials, One Range

Clumping clay - saponite and bentonite, milled ultra compact. Seals urine into a clump you lift out whole. The Ultra Compact, 2X Odour Attack and Black & White bags
Classic absorbent clay - attapulgite, heat treated. Soaks urine in and lets it evaporate, with no clump to scoop. The Outdoor Living bag
Silica crystals - non-clumping, dries urine out, lightest clay-free option and the longest lasting per bag
Plant fibre - the Tofu bag. Clumps like clay at a quarter of the weight, and is flushable in small amounts

Which One To Buy

Ultra Compact - the default. Unscented or baby powder, 5kg or 10kg, and the cheapest in the range
2X Odour Attack - the same clumping base with the double odour control formula. Worth the extra in a multi-cat house or a small flat
Black & White - the premium clumping bag, rated for the firmest clump
Outdoor Living Classic - for a covered balcony, garage or utility tray where damp air would wreck a clumping litter
Crystal - a month per bag for one cat, light to carry, nothing wet to scoop
Tofu - low dust, low tracking and soft underfoot. The one for a cat with sore paws or a household with asthma

Getting It Right Whichever You Pick

One tray per cat plus a spare, somewhere quiet, away from food bowls
Clumping litters go 5 to 7 cm deep; crystals go shallower, about 3 to 4 cm
Scoop daily. No litter made outperforms scooping, and the ammonia smell is bacteria working on urine over hours, not the urine itself
Never switch the whole tray at once. Mix the new litter in over a week or two, or expect a puddle somewhere else
Wash trays with hot water and unscented detergent. Anything with ammonia in it smells like urine to a cat

Good To Know

Clumping litters are not the right first litter for a very young kitten still mouthing everything
Only the Tofu bag is flushable, and even then a scoop at a time. Clay and crystals swell and will block a drain
Cat faeces can carry toxoplasmosis. Anyone pregnant or immunosuppressed should avoid handling the tray, and everyone should wash their hands afterwards
A cat straining, going more often, passing blood or suddenly avoiding the tray needs a vet rather than a different litter. Urinary blockage in male cats is an emergency
