The Hagen Breeding Box in medium is a clear plastic box with a vented lid and a large access door. It is the container every reptile keeper ends up owning several of -- for carrying an animal to the vet, quarantining a new one, raising hatchlings and keeping feeder insects.

Key Features

  • Clear Throughout: You can see in from every side without opening it, which matters for a quarantine animal you want to watch and not disturb
  • Stackable: Designed to stack, which is the point of them if you keep more than one
  • Ventilation Both Sides: Slots in both side walls rather than a single vented panel, so there is airflow across rather than just out of the top
  • Large Access Door With A Secure Lid: Big enough to lift an animal out or put a dish in without taking the whole top off
  • Medium Size: The larger of the two in this range. Hagen do not print the measurements on this listing -- ask us and we will measure one before you order

Not Permanent Housing

A box this size cannot hold a proper temperature gradient or take a UVB lamp, so it is a short-stay container rather than a home. Its real uses are carrying an animal to the vet, quarantining a new arrival, keeping feeder insects, raising hatchlings for their first weeks, and holding a reptile safely for an hour while you clean its terrarium. Anything longer than that needs a full enclosure.

Who Makes It

Exo Terra is the reptile and amphibian brand of Rolf C. Hagen, the Montreal company founded in 1955. Its range runs from glass terrariums and UVB lighting to substrates, hides and the plastic boxes keepers use for transport and quarantine.

Good To Know

  • Check the lid clicks fully shut every time. Snakes and geckos are persistent about corners and gaps, and a small animal loose in a house is usually lost.
  • A plastic box in a car heats up very fast in this climate. Never leave one in a parked car, keep it out of direct sun, and move an animal in the cool part of the day.
  • Line it with kitchen paper for transport and quarantine. It is easy to change, and it shows you clearly what has been passed -- which is most of the point of a quarantine period.
  • Keep feeder insect boxes separate from the ones you use for animals, and wash them between uses.
