Description

The Hagen Sand Perch Covers are sanded paper sleeves that slide over a thin cage perch. They keep the perch itself clean and give a bird a rougher surface to grip. Please read the note further down before you fit them to every perch in the cage -- there is a reason to be careful with them.

Key Features

  • Six Per Pack: Enough to keep replacing one cover for a long time
  • Size: 19 cm long and 1 cm in diameter, which suits the thin perches in a budgie, canary or finch cage
  • Keeps The Perch Clean: The cover takes the droppings and the food residue, and comes off to be thrown away
  • Quick To Fit: Slides straight on, no tools

Use Abrasive Perch Covers Sparingly

This is worth knowing before you fit them. Avian vets generally advise against covering all of a bird's perches in sand or sandpaper: a bird stands on the same spot for most of its life, and a constantly abrasive surface can wear the sole of the foot and lead to pressure sores, which are painful and slow to heal. Natural wood branches of several different diameters do more for foot health than any cover, because they keep changing where the weight falls. If you use a sand cover, put it on one perch rather than all of them, keep it away from the perch the bird sleeps on, and check the undersides of the feet regularly for redness or flattened patches. Overgrown nails are a clipping job, not a sandpaper job.

Good To Know

  • Check the measurement against your perch before ordering. At 1 cm these are for small birds -- they will not go over a cockatiel or parrot perch.
  • Replace a cover as soon as it is soiled rather than letting it build up. A damp, dirty abrasive surface is the worst of both problems.
  • Overgrown nails and an overgrown beak are both jobs for an avian vet or an experienced groomer. Neither is solved by a rougher perch, and a bird whose nails keep overgrowing may have an underlying problem.
  • A bird limping, shifting its weight constantly, or with red or shiny patches on the sole of the foot needs the abrasive surfaces out of the cage and a vet appointment.
