JR Pet Pure Topper and Mixer - 400g is a moist single-protein meat topper for mixing into a dog's existing food.

Key Features

• For the dog that has gone off its food: A spoonful stirred through kibble changes the smell and the texture of the whole bowl, which is usually all a fussy dog needs. It works far better than switching food again, and it does not restart the gut upset that switching causes.
• Adds moisture to a dry diet: A dog on kibble alone takes in very little water with its food. Mixing in a moist topper is an easy way to raise that, which matters for any dog with a history of urinary or kidney trouble.

Using It

• Start with a spoonful stirred right through the food rather than placed on top, so the dog cannot eat the topper and leave the rest.
• Reduce the main food slightly to allow for it. A topper is food, not a seasoning.
• It is also the easiest way to hide a tablet, because the smell covers the medicine and the texture holds it.
• Warm water over kibble plus a spoonful of topper releases far more smell again, which is the trick worth knowing for an old dog whose nose is going.
• Once opened, keep it covered in the fridge and use it within a couple of days.

How Much Is Too Much

• Treats want to sit at around a tenth of a dog's daily calories. Everything above that either comes out of the main meal or goes on as weight.
• Air-dried meat is dense, because the water has been taken out of it. A 100 g bag is closer to three or four hundred grams of fresh meat in what it actually delivers, so it goes much further than the weight suggests.
• For training, break them small. A dog works just as hard for a fingernail sized piece as for a whole stick, and you get ten times the repetitions out of the bag.
• On a day with a big chew in it, cut the dinner. That is far easier than trying to take the weight off afterwards.

Good To Know

• This is a topper rather than a complete food. It has no added vitamins or minerals, so it goes on top of a balanced diet rather than replacing one.
• JR list it as suitable from four weeks. Wait until a puppy is properly weaned onto solid food.
