K&H Universal Mount Kitty Sill with Cardboard Track - 14 x 24 in is a window-mounted cat perch, 14 x 24 in or about 36 x 61 cm, with a cardboard scratching surface and a ball running in a track along one side.

Key Features

• Perch, scratcher and toy in one mount: It is the one in the range that gives a cat something to do rather than only somewhere to sit, which suits a cat that is in on its own all day.
• Rated to 27 kg: 60 lb, which is several times any cat. The margin is there for the landing rather than the sitting, which is where a perch gets tested.
• Snap-in legs: The legs let you set the height on the glass rather than taking whatever the suction cups give you.
• Your window has to be wide enough: It needs at least 17 in, about 43 cm, of glass. Measure before you order, because this is the one that catches people out.

Getting The Suction Cups To Hold

• Clean the glass and the cups with plain water and let both dry before you mount it. A film of dust or of glass cleaner is the usual reason a cup lets go, far more often than the cup itself.
• Press each cup flat and twist it to push the air out from under it. A cup with a bubble still trapped under it will creep down the glass over a day or two rather than fail outright.
• Check them every few weeks, and re-seat them after a hot spell. Glass that heats through the afternoon and cools overnight works air back under a cup.
• Mount it low enough that a drop would not hurt, and not over tile, a step or anything hard. This matters more with a nervous cat or a heavy one.

A Sunny Window Through The Summer

• A window perch is lovely from November to March and can be punishing in July. Glass concentrates the heat, and a cat that has chosen the sun does not always leave it in good time.
• Pick a window that falls into shade for part of the day, or be ready to move it to one that does. Given a warm spot and a cool spot a cat will regulate itself; given only the warm one it will not.
• Keep water within easy reach of wherever the perch ends up.

Keeping It Clean

• The cardboard surface does not wash. Run a vacuum over it and across the floor under the window, which is where the shed flakes end up.
• Ask us before you order if a washable cover matters to you on this one. We would rather check what is in the box than tell you from the packaging.

Good To Know

• The cardboard is a wearing part. A cat that uses it properly will go through it, and that is the scratcher doing its job rather than failing.
• Cardboard scratchers shed. Expect a scattering of brown flakes under the window and plan to run a vacuum past it.
• A brought-in line rather than something off our shelf, so it comes in to order rather than going out the same day. Ask us to confirm the timing before you order.
