What is a Munchkin cat?

The Munchkin is the short-legged "sausage" cat — a small-to-medium breed with a normal-sized body on distinctively short legs, caused by a natural genetic mutation. Far from slowing them down, Munchkins are lively, playful and confident, scampering around low to the ground and often sitting up like meerkats to survey the room. Home setup for short legs

Munchkins run, play and climb happily, but they can't jump as high as long-legged cats. A few small adjustments make their world easy to navigate:

• Choose a litter box with a low entry so they can step in easily.
• Pick cat furniture with lower platforms, ramps or steps rather than tall single leaps.
• Add small steps or ramps to favourite perches, sofas and window sills.

Play, diet and weight

Munchkins are energetic and love interactive play, which also helps with the one thing that matters most for this breed: keeping them lean. Extra weight puts more strain on a long back and short legs, so measured meals and daily play are key.

• Watch for any signs of spinal (lordosis) or chest (pectus) issues, which can appear in the breed.
• Choose a responsible breeder who prioritises health, and keep up regular vet checks.

Buy from a registered, reputable breeder who health-screens their cats, provides vaccination records, and lets you meet the kitten and its parents.
