Is Acana Good? Acana Dog & Cat Food Recipe Guide (UAE)
Is Acana good for your dog or cat? Every Acana dog food and cat food range explained, with which recipe to choose for puppies, small breeds, weight control, sensitive stomachs, indoor cats and kittens.

Acana is one of the most searched premium pet food brands in the UAE, and also one of the most confusing to shop for. There are puppy, adult, senior, small-breed and large-breed recipes, a "Highest Protein" line, a grain-inclusive "Classics" line, single-protein "Singles", and a separate set of cat recipes. This guide explains what makes Acana different, whether it is a good choice for your pet, and exactly which recipe to pick for your dog or cat.
Is Acana good? The short answer
Yes, for most healthy dogs and cats Acana is a strong choice. It is a meat-first, protein-rich food with no artificial preservatives, colours or flavours, and every bag shows exactly how much of the recipe comes from animal ingredients. It sits between everyday supermarket brands and its higher-protein sister brand, Orijen, on both protein and price.
- Best for: owners who want a high-meat diet with clear labelling, and a recipe matched to their pet's age, size or sensitivity.
- Think twice if: your pet has a diagnosed medical condition that needs a veterinary diet, or your vet has recommended a grain-inclusive food. Acana's Classics range covers the second case.

What makes Acana different
Acana is made by Champion Petfoods, the same company that makes Orijen. Three ideas run through every recipe:
- Meat first. Fresh or raw animal ingredients lead the recipe, rather than grain or plant protein.
- WholePrey ratios. Recipes include meat, organs and cartilage, the most nutrient-dense parts of the animal, so fewer synthetic additives are needed.
- Three numbers on every bag. The percentage of animal ingredients, the percentage of fruit, vegetables and botanicals, and 0% artificial preservatives, colours or flavours.
The animal-ingredient share is the easiest way to compare recipes: from 50% in the Classics and Singles ranges up to 70% in Highest Protein dog food and 85% in the Premium Paté wet cat food.

Acana cat food ranges explained
| Range | Animal ingredients | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Highest Protein (Wild Prairie, Grasslands, Pacifica, Indoor Cat) | 75% | All life stages; cats that do best on a very high-meat diet |
| Adult recipes (Bountiful Catch, Homestead Harvest, Indoor Entrée) | 65% | Adult cats; Indoor Entrée for less active indoor cats |
| Kitten (First Feast dry, Premium Paté Kitten) | Kitten-specific | Growing kittens |
| Premium Paté wet food | 85% | Extra moisture, mixed feeding or fussy eaters |
Which Acana is right for my cat?
- Indoor cat: Acana Indoor Entrée is a popular choice for flat-dwelling cats, balanced for a healthy weight and digestion.
- Kitten: Acana First Feast is made for growing kittens.
- More moisture: add Acana Premium Paté alongside dry food. Cats often drink too little, and wet food helps, especially through the UAE summer.

Is Acana grain-free?
Most Acana dog and cat recipes contain no grain ingredients. The Classics range, and some Singles recipes, include wholesome grains such as oats instead.
In 2019 the US Food and Drug Administration published reports of a heart condition, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), in dogs eating grain-free diets, and Acana was among the brands named. The FDA did not establish that any food caused the condition, and the research is ongoing. If your dog belongs to a breed prone to heart disease, or you would simply rather avoid the question, choose a grain-inclusive Classics recipe and talk to your vet.
How to switch to Acana
Acana is richer than many everyday foods, so change over gradually across 5 to 7 days:
- Days 1 to 2: one quarter Acana, three quarters old food.
- Days 3 to 4: half and half.
- Days 5 to 6: three quarters Acana.
- Day 7: all Acana.
Follow the feeding table on the bag for your pet's weight. Because Acana is calorie-dense, many owners find they feed less by volume than with their previous food.
Buying Acana in the UAE

- Bag size: start with a 2 kg (dog) or 1.8 kg (cat) bag to check your pet likes the recipe, then move to the larger bags, which cost less per kilo.
- Storage: keep the bag sealed and away from heat. In UAE summers, store it indoors in an air-conditioned room, not on a balcony or in a car.
- Delivery: The Pets Club delivers Acana across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and every Emirate, with free delivery over AED 100.
- Repeat orders: set your recipe on Auto Delivery so it arrives on schedule, with a discount on repeat orders.
