Acana vs Orijen: Which Is Better for Your Dog? (UAE Guide)

Acana and Orijen are made by the same company, but which suits your dog? We compare protein, ingredients, grains and price, then match recipes side by side for puppies, small breeds, weight control and sensitive dogs.

Acana and Orijen sit side by side on the shelf, carry the same maker's name on the back of the bag, and both promise meat-first nutrition. So which one should you feed your dog? This guide compares the two brands on protein, ingredients, grains, price and suitability, then matches recipes side by side so you can choose with confidence.

Acana vs Orijen: the quick verdict

  • Choose Orijen if you want the highest-protein dry food available and your dog thrives on it: active, healthy adults and puppies with no sensitivities.
  • Choose Acana if you want a meat-first food at a lower price, need a specific recipe (single protein, light, senior, large breed), or would prefer a grain-inclusive option.

Both are premium foods. The difference is how far each goes on animal protein, and what that costs.

Same maker, two philosophies

Acana and Orijen are both made by Champion Petfoods. They share the same core ideas: fresh or raw animal ingredients first, WholePrey ratios of meat, organs and cartilage, and no artificial preservatives, colours or flavours. Where they differ is how far they push the meat content.

  • Orijen is the "as nature intended" range: 85% to 90% animal ingredients, and the first five ingredients are always fresh or raw.
  • Acana is the balanced range: 50% to 75% animal ingredients, with more fruit, vegetables and, in some recipes, wholesome grains.

When Orijen is the better choice

Very active dogs are where Orijen's extra protein earns its price.
  • Your dog is a healthy, active adult, such as a working breed or a dog doing regular runs, beach days or desert walks in the cooler months.
  • You want the most meat-dense dry food you can buy, and the higher price is not a concern.
  • Your dog is already doing well on a high-protein diet and you want to keep it that way.

When Acana is the better choice

Older and less active dogs rarely need the richest food.
  • Sensitive stomach or skin: Acana Singles use one animal protein, which makes it easier to avoid an ingredient your dog reacts to.
  • Your vet prefers grains: the Classics range includes wholesome grains. Orijen has no grain-inclusive recipes.
  • Less active, older or overweight dogs: a very rich diet is not always needed. Acana Light & Fit and Senior are made for these dogs.
  • Value: Acana gives you a meat-first diet for less per kilo, which adds up fast for large breeds.

What about cats?

Both brands make high-meat dry food for cats and kittens.

The same logic applies. Orijen cat food, such as Orijen Original Cat, Six Fish and Guardian 8, has 90% animal ingredients. Acana cat food ranges from 65% in the adult recipes to 75% in Highest Protein, and includes Indoor Entrée for less active indoor cats. For kittens, compare Orijen Kitten with Acana First Feast.

Switching between Acana and Orijen

Because the two brands share the same approach, many dogs move between them easily. Still change over gradually: about a week when moving to Acana, and 10 to 14 days when moving to the richer Orijen. Mix a little more of the new food into the old each day, and slow down if you see loose stools.

Check with your vet first

If your dog has kidney disease, a heart condition or another diagnosed illness, ask your vet before switching to a high-protein food of either brand.

Frequently asked questions

Is Orijen better than Acana?

Orijen has more animal ingredients (85% to 90% against Acana's 50% to 75%), so it is the higher-protein choice. That does not make it better for every dog: Acana offers single-protein, light, senior and grain-inclusive recipes that Orijen does not, at a lower price.

Are Acana and Orijen made by the same company?

Yes. Both are made by Champion Petfoods and follow the same meat-first, WholePrey approach. Orijen is the higher-protein range and Acana the more balanced one.

Why is Orijen more expensive than Acana?

Orijen uses more animal ingredients, which cost more than fruit, vegetables and grains. At The Pets Club, an Orijen bag typically costs roughly 20% to 40% more than the matching Acana recipe.

Can I mix Acana and Orijen?

Yes, many owners do, for example to raise protein without paying for Orijen alone. Introduce the mix gradually, as you would any new food, and adjust portions so you do not overfeed.

Which is better for a puppy, Acana or Orijen?

Both make puppy recipes for small, medium and large breeds. Orijen Puppy is higher in protein; Acana Puppy is a little gentler and costs less. Choose by your puppy's expected adult size, and ask your vet for large and giant breeds.
