Budgie Care in the UAE (2026): Cage, Diet, Taming and Health

Everything you need to know about keeping budgies in the UAE: whether to get one or two, the right cage and where to put it, a healthy diet beyond seed, taming and teaching a budgie to talk, keeping birds safe from summer heat and household fumes, signs of illness, the rules on owning and importing birds, and running costs in AED.

Budgie Care in the UAE (2026): Cage, Diet, Taming and Health

The budgie, or budgerigar, is the classic first bird and a favourite in UAE homes. It's small, cheerful, easy to feed and can learn to talk, but it is a flock bird that needs company, space to fly and a better diet than a bowl of seed. This guide covers what a budgie needs in a UAE home: one bird or two, the right cage, food, taming, keeping it safe from heat and fumes, health, the rules and what it costs.

The budgie at a glance

The budgerigar is a small parakeet from the dry grasslands of Australia, where it lives in large, noisy flocks. Pet budgies come in many colours, from the wild green to blue, yellow and white.

Trait What to expect
Size About 18cm from head to tail tip
Lifespan Often 6–10 years, and 10–12 or more with excellent care
Company A flock bird. Happiest in a pair or group, or with plenty of daily attention
Cage At least 76 x 46 x 46cm for a pair, bars no wider than about 1.25cm. Wider is better
Diet Pellets as the base, fresh vegetables daily, seed and millet in small amounts
Talking Many learn words and phrases, males especially

One budgie or two?

Budgies are flock birds, and a lone budgie can become bored, lonely and noisy. There are two good options:

  • A pair: best if you're out at work all day. Two males, or a male and a female, usually get on well. A pair keeps each other company, though they may bond more with each other than with you.
  • A single bird: possible if someone is home most of the day and will talk to, handle and play with it every day. Single budgies often become very tame and are usually the better talkers.

Telling males from females: in adult budgies, the cere (the fleshy patch above the beak) is usually blue in males and brown, beige or whitish in females. In young birds it's hard to tell, so ask the seller.

Choosing a budgie cage and setting it up

  • Size: PetMD's minimum is 46 x 46 x 46cm for one budgie and 76 x 46 x 46cm for a pair. Budgies fly from side to side, so choose a wide cage over a tall one, and go bigger if you can. Our bird cage guide suggests about 99 x 51 x 81cm.
  • Bar spacing: about 1.25cm or less, with some horizontal bars for climbing. The Hagen Vision double-height cage is made for small birds and has room for a pair. See all bird cages and accessories.
  • Perches: at least 10cm long and about 1cm across, in different thicknesses. Natural wood perches help keep feet and nails healthy.
  • Toys: budgies love bells, ladders, swings and things to shred. Rotate them weekly, and try a RIO Happy Ring snack toy or a foraging cup. See all bird toys.
  • Water: fresh every day. A clip-on water fountain stays cleaner than an open dish.

Where to put it: in a busy room, against a wall, out of direct sun, away from the AC vent and never in the kitchen. Cover the cage at night so your budgies get 10–12 hours of dark, quiet sleep.

Out-of-cage time: let your budgies fly in a safe room every day. Close windows and doors, switch off ceiling fans, cover mirrors and big windows, and keep cats and dogs out.

Taming and teaching a budgie to talk

  • Give it a few days to settle before handling. Sit near the cage and talk softly.
  • Use millet as a reward. Offer a piece through the bars, then from your hand inside the cage. Once it eats from your hand, offer a finger to step onto, pressed gently against its belly.
  • Keep sessions short, a few minutes several times a day, and never grab the bird.
  • Repeat words and phrases clearly and often, in the same tone. Young males usually learn fastest.

What to feed a budgie

Many budgies are fed seed alone, and it's the most common cause of illness. Seed is high in fat and low in vitamin A, calcium and iodine, which leads to obesity, fatty liver disease and an enlarged thyroid (goitre). PetMD recommends:

Food Share of the diet
Pellets made for budgies or small parakeets 60–70%
Fresh vegetables, fruit and treats 30–40%, with treats no more than 10%
  • If your budgie eats seed, use a good budgie mix such as RIO Daily Food for Budgies, and switch to pellets gradually over a few weeks. Watch that your bird is eating the new food.
  • Offer vegetables every day: leafy greens, broccoli, carrot, pepper and corn, chopped small. Remove leftovers within a few hours in the UAE heat.
  • Add calcium with a cuttlebone or mineral block. Budgies don't need grit.
  • Treats in moderation: millet sprays or RIO Supergreens & Algae sticks.
  • Never feed avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, onion, garlic, salty or sugary foods, or fruit pits and seeds.

Keeping a budgie safe in the UAE

Heat and fumes can kill quickly

Never put a budgie's cage on a balcony or in a sunny window, even for a short time in the warm months. A bird panting with its beak open and its wings held away from its body is overheating: move it somewhere cool and call a vet. Birds' lungs are far more sensitive than ours, and fumes from overheated non-stick (PTFE) pans, candles, air fresheners and aerosol sprays can kill a small bird.

  • Keep budgies indoors in air-conditioning, but out of the cold draught from the vent.
  • Burn incense, including bukhoor and oud, in another room with the door shut and windows open, and keep perfume and cleaning sprays away from the cage.
  • Clean the cage with bird-safe products and rinse well. Our Bioline Cage Clean spray is made for birds and small animals.
  • Watch other pets. Even a gentle cat or dog can kill a budgie in a moment, and cat saliva is dangerous to birds.

Budgie health: signs to watch for

Budgies hide illness, so a bird that looks unwell is often quite sick. See a vet the same day if you notice:

  • fluffed-up feathers, sleeping a lot or sitting on the cage floor
  • watery or discoloured droppings, or droppings stuck around the vent
  • sneezing, discharge from the nostrils, tail bobbing or breathing with an open beak
  • crusty growths on the beak, face or legs
  • lumps, weakness or loss of balance

Common problems in budgies include tumours, goitre, vitamin A deficiency, scaly face and leg mites, obesity and liver disease, foot problems and psittacosis, a bacterial infection that can also pass to people. A new bird should have a vet check before it joins others.

Book a yearly check-up with an avian or exotics vet. Not every clinic treats birds, so call first. Our guides to vets in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah and Ajman list clinics.

Owning a budgie in the UAE: the rules

  • No CITES permit for the bird itself. Almost all parrots are covered by CITES, the international treaty on trade in wild species, which the UAE enforces. The budgie is one of a handful of parrot species left out, along with the cockatiel and the peach-faced lovebird.
  • Importing is different. Bringing any live bird into the UAE needs an import permit from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, and rules can change during bird-flu outbreaks.
  • Buy from a reputable seller. Choose an alert, active bird with smooth feathers, clean nostrils and a clean vent, and ask how old it is and what it has been eating.

What a budgie costs to keep in the UAE

Budgies are among the cheapest pets to feed. The cage is the main cost, so it's worth buying a good one once.

Cost What to budget (The Pets Club prices, 28 Oct 2026)
Cage AED 855 for the Hagen Vision double-height cage, which fits a pair
Seed mix AED 13.50 for 500g of RIO Daily Food for Budgies, which lasts a pair several weeks
Calcium AED 18 for a Hagen cuttlebone twin pack
Toys and treats Replace chewed toys regularly. Many cost under AED 50
Vet A yearly check-up with an avian vet, plus any treatment. Ask the clinic for a quote

Budgie FAQs

Should I keep one budgie or two?

Two, if you're out for most of the day. Budgies are flock birds and a pair keeps each other company. A single budgie can be happy if someone spends time with it every day, and single birds often become tamer and better talkers.

How long do budgies live?

Often 6 to 10 years, and 10 to 12 years or more with excellent care. A varied diet with pellets and vegetables, a roomy cage, daily exercise and yearly vet checks all help.

What should I feed my budgie?

Pellets should make up about 60–70% of the diet, with fresh vegetables, some fruit and treats making up the rest. A seed-only diet leads to obesity, liver disease and goitre. Give a cuttlebone for calcium. Budgies don't need grit.

Can budgies live in the UAE heat?

Yes, indoors in air-conditioning. Never put a budgie's cage on a balcony or in a sunny window in the warm months. A bird panting with its beak open and its wings held out is overheating and needs cooling and a vet.

How do I tell if my budgie is male or female?

In adult budgies, look at the cere, the fleshy patch above the beak. It is usually blue in males and brown, beige or whitish in females. In young birds it's hard to tell, so ask the seller or an avian vet.
