What a Paludarium Actually Is

A paludarium holds three zones at once:

• The terrestrial zone — planted land with rocks and wood, for invertebrates, small reptiles and amphibians
• The riparian zone — the margin where land meets water, where semi-aquatic species actually spend most of their time
• The aquatic zone — shaped into a stream, pond or pool for aquatic amphibians, fish or shrimp

Most enclosures force you to pick one. This gives you all three.

Why the Water Section Earns Its Place

It is not decoration. Water stabilises temperature and humidity, gives live plants a permanent reservoir, and supports the biological processes that make a bioactive setup work — beneficial bacteria break down waste much as they would in a stream. Add live plants, moss and a small waterfall and the enclosure begins to look after itself.

At 30 x 30 cm the footprint is genuinely small — check the adult size of your species before committing to it.

Setting Up and Maintaining

• Build a false bottom to support the land section. It hides filters, pumps and heaters and doubles as biological filtration media.
• Cycle the water section before adding fish or aquatic animals.
• Test the water and carry out regular partial changes. A small water volume shifts chemistry quickly — the smaller the pool, the faster things go wrong, so do not skip this.
• Use dechlorinated water throughout. Amphibian skin is permeable and chlorine is harmful to them.
• Dual doors and the removable screen cover make cleaning and replanting straightforward.
