The Exo Terra Natural Terrarium Tall is a glass habitat designed by European herpetologists, built taller than it is deep for species that climb.

Why Height Matters

Floor space is the wrong measure for a great many reptiles. Crested geckos, chameleons, tree frogs, emerald tree boas and most day geckos are arboreal — in the wild they live in branches and rarely touch the ground. Give one a wide, shallow enclosure and most of it goes unused; give it height, and the animal uses the whole volume.

Height also helps with temperature gradients. Warm air rises, so a tall terrarium naturally forms a warm upper basking zone and a cooler floor, letting the animal thermoregulate by climbing rather than by walking end to end.

Important: The Screen Top and UVB

The full screen top lets UVB through, which is exactly what you want — but mesh still filters a share of it, in some cases up to half. If you mount a UVB bulb above the screen, choose a stronger bulb than you would for an open setup, or mount it inside.

Setting Up

• Place on a level, load-bearing surface. A glass terrarium with substrate, water and decor is heavy.
• Keep out of direct sunlight — glass traps heat quickly and a terrarium in a sunny window can become lethal within hours.
• Set up and run the enclosure for several days, checking temperatures and humidity, before the animal goes in.
