The Exo Terra Turtle Filter FX-200 is an external canister filter for turtle tanks, paludariums and aquatic terrariums, supplied complete with a spray bar and all the filtration media it needs.

Why Turtles Need Serious Filtration

Turtles are among the messiest animals anyone keeps indoors. They eat in the water, defecate in the water, and produce a heavy waste load for their size — far more than fish of comparable weight.

The consequence is ammonia. In a poorly filtered turtle tank it accumulates fast, and the results are well documented: shell rot, eye infections and respiratory illness, along with water that smells. It is why turtle keepers are routinely advised to over-filter rather than match filter to tank volume.

An external canister is the right tool because the media sits outside the tank, giving far more filter volume than any internal unit — and leaving the tank itself clear for the animal.

The Spray Bar Matters Too

The included spray bar returns water across the surface rather than as a single jet. That aerates the water, which supports the beneficial bacteria doing the biological filtration, and it avoids the strong current that turtles have to fight against constantly.

  • Rinse biological media in tank water, never under the tap. Chlorine kills the beneficial bacteria that do most of the filtering, and a filter stripped of them stops working until the colony rebuilds.
  • Replace mechanical and chemical media in stages rather than all at once, for the same reason.
  • A filter does not remove the need for partial water changes. Do both.
