The Exo Terra Repti Clear F250 is a three-stage submersible filter for terrariums and aqua-terrariums, with a large media volume and adjustable flow.

What Three-Stage Filtration Means

Each stage removes something different, and all three are needed:

• Mechanical — traps solid waste, uneaten food and shed skin
• Chemical — carbon adsorbs dissolved compounds and odours
• Biological — beneficial bacteria convert ammonia from waste into far less harmful nitrate

The biological stage is the one that matters most and the one people accidentally destroy. Those bacteria take weeks to establish and are killed by chlorinated tap water. This filter is designed so cartridges can be replaced in rotation rather than all together, which keeps a live bacterial colony in the filter at all times — the single most useful design feature in it.

Maintenance

• Rinse foam in tank water, never under the tap. Chlorine kills the bacteria doing the biological filtering, and the filter then stops working until the colony rebuilds over several weeks.
• Replace cartridges one at a time, spaced apart.
• Never let the filter run dry — it is cooled by the water it sits in.
• Unplug before reaching into the water.
• A filter does not replace partial water changes. Do both.
