The Exo Terra Repti Clear F350 is a three-stage submersible filter for terrariums and aqua-terrariums — the larger of the two Repti Clear filters, for greater water volumes.

What Three-Stage Filtration Means

Each stage removes something different, and all three are needed:

• Mechanical — traps solid waste, uneaten food and shed skin
• Chemical — carbon adsorbs dissolved compounds and odours
• Biological — beneficial bacteria convert ammonia from waste into far less harmful nitrate

The biological stage is the one that matters most and the one people accidentally destroy. Those bacteria take weeks to establish and are killed by chlorinated tap water. This filter is designed so cartridges can be replaced in rotation rather than all together, which keeps a live bacterial colony in the filter at all times.

F250 or F350?

The F350 is longer at 28 cm and holds more media, which suits a larger water section. When in doubt, choose the larger — over-filtering is safer than under-filtering, particularly with messy animals like turtles, and you can always turn the flow down.

Maintenance

• Rinse foam in tank water, never under the tap. Chlorine kills the bacteria doing the biological filtering.
• Replace cartridges one at a time, spaced apart.
• Never let the filter run dry.
• Unplug before reaching into the water.
• A filter does not replace partial water changes. Do both.
