What Coarse Foam Does

It is the first mechanical stage — the one that catches the larger material before it reaches anything else: uneaten food, droppings, shed skin and substrate. Doing that job first is what stops the finer media clogging and keeps flow up.

It also carries a large share of the filter's beneficial bacteria, which is why how you clean it matters more than how often you replace it.

Cleaning and Replacing

  • Rinse in tank water, never under the tap. Chlorine kills the bacterial colony, and the filter stops processing ammonia until it rebuilds over several weeks.
  • Squeeze gently in a bucket of removed tank water and put it back.
  • Replace only when the foam is breaking down or no longer springs back — not simply because it looks dirty. A mature foam is doing its best work.
  • When you do replace it, do not change other media at the same time.

For the Repti Clear F250 only. Pack of 2. The F350 takes a different size.
