Preparing It

1. Place a brick in a bucket and add warm water — it expands substantially, so use a container larger than you think you need.
2. Let it absorb fully, then break it apart.
3. Squeeze out excess water until it is damp rather than dripping.
4. Spread to a depth that lets your species dig.

Important

• Keep it damp, not waterlogged. Saturated coconut fibre grows mould and turns sour, and permanently wet substrate causes scale rot and skin infections in reptiles.
• Feed in a dish, or in a separate container. Loose substrate swallowed with food can cause gut impaction, which is serious and sometimes fatal.
• Spot-clean waste daily and replace the substrate periodically.
• Use dechlorinated water for amphibian setups — their skin is permeable.
