Replacement carbon pads for the Exo Terra Turtle External Canister Filter FX-200 — the chemical filtration stage.

What Carbon Does

Activated carbon adsorbs dissolved organic compounds that foam cannot catch: the substances that make turtle water yellow and give it a smell. Foam removes solids, bacteria process ammonia, and carbon handles what remains in solution.

When to Replace

Carbon has a finite capacity. Once its pore structure is saturated it simply stops working — and unlike a clogged foam, there is no visible sign. Replace it on a schedule rather than waiting for a change in the water. Roughly every 4 weeks in a turtle tank, or with each filter service.

Carbon cannot be cleaned and reused. Rinsing removes surface debris but does nothing to restore capacity.

Servicing Tip

When you change carbon, leave the foam alone. Replacing everything at once strips out the beneficial bacteria doing your biological filtration and the tank can spike with ammonia. Stagger the changes.
