The Use Most People Underrate: Quarantine

Anyone keeping more than one animal should own a faunarium, and the reason is quarantine rather than transport.

A newly acquired reptile should be kept separately for several weeks before going anywhere near an established collection. Parasites and infections are common in newly imported and rehomed animals, often with no visible signs at first, and a single introduction can spread through a collection before you know anything is wrong. A plain plastic container with paper towel substrate is ideal for this: easy to disinfect completely, and easy to observe an animal in.

The same applies to a sick animal that needs watching, or one recovering after a vet visit.

Important

A faunarium is for temporary housing and transport, not a permanent home. It has no provision for proper heating, lighting or a temperature gradient, and no reptile should live in one long term.

• Keep out of direct sunlight — a closed plastic box in the sun overheats within minutes and will kill an animal.
• Use plain paper towel as substrate when quarantining, so you can see droppings clearly and change it daily.
• Wash your hands between handling quarantined and established animals.
