The Exo Terra Screen Terrarium Small/Tall is an aluminium mesh enclosure, 45 x 45 x 60 cm, for arboreal reptiles and amphibians that are sensitive to stagnant air.

Why Mesh Rather Than Glass

This is species-specific rather than a matter of taste.

Chameleons and similar arboreal species need moving air. They are unusually prone to respiratory infection in stagnant, humid conditions, and a glass terrarium holds air far more than a mesh one. Non-restricted airflow also minimises odours and fungal growth in the enclosure.

The mesh design gives a broader temperature gradient: heat escapes rather than accumulating, so the animal can find genuinely cool air and is far less likely to overheat.

The trade-off is humidity. Mesh does not hold it, so humid-climate species need regular misting or an automatic system.

Setting Up

• Add an Exo Terra Background (optional) to raise humidity and collect misting water — chameleons, day geckos and many arboreal species drink droplets from leaves and will often ignore a water bowl entirely.
• Mount a basking lamp above the mesh, never inside. A reptile that climbs onto a hot bulb will burn badly, and many will not move away in time.
• Mesh filters UVB, so position the bulb close above the screen or use a high-output one.
