Good To Know

• Floor area is about 1536 sq cm. Current welfare guidance puts the minimum unbroken floor for a Syrian hamster at around 4,000 sq cm, and tubes, shelves and upper storeys do not count towards it.
• Hamsters burrow. Give at least 15 to 20 cm of bedding depth in part of the enclosure. A hamster with nowhere to dig bar-chews instead, and bar-chewing is a sign of stress rather than boredom.
• Check the wheel. A Syrian hamster needs one of about 28 cm across or its back stays arched as it runs, and a dwarf needs about 20 cm. The wheel supplied with a cage this size is usually smaller than that and is worth replacing.
• Syrian hamsters live alone. Two in one cage will fight, often fatally, however well they got on as babies. Only some dwarf species tolerate company, and even then not reliably.
• Not a rabbit or guinea pig cage, whatever a listing says. Both need several times this floor area and solid flooring.
• Hamsters are heat-sensitive. Above about 24 C a Syrian can drop into a torpor that looks like death. Keep the cage out of direct sun and away from a window in summer.
• Small rodents hide illness. A wet tail, laboured breathing, a wet chin, sudden weight loss or a hamster that stays shut in its house all day needs a vet who sees exotics, quickly.
