Description

The Fluval 107 Motor Head Maintenance Kit is the genuine motor head service kit for the Fluval 107 canister filter — the wear parts that restore flow and quiet a filter that has started to rattle.

Key Features

  • Made for the Fluval 107 specifically
  • The impeller and its shaft are the parts that wear. A filter that has slowed down or started to buzz is almost always telling you about the impeller, not the motor
  • Servicing the motor head is far cheaper than replacing a filter, and it usually restores the original flow completely
  • Genuine Fluval parts, so the tolerances are right — a near-enough impeller runs noisily and wears the housing
  • Made by Fluval, the aquatics brand of Rolf C. Hagen, which has been building aquarium filters since 1975

Fitting It

  • Unplug anything electrical before putting your hands in the tank
  • Disconnect the hoses and take the unit to a sink rather than working over the tank
  • Check the old part against the new one before fitting. If they differ, stop and check the model number
  • A smear of silicone lubricant on an O-ring before reassembly makes the next service much easier and helps the seal sit properly
  • Prime the filter and watch the first few minutes of running for leaks before you walk away

Good To Know

  • Fluval recommends servicing the impeller roughly once a year on a filter in daily use
  • Before ordering, check whether the problem is actually the impeller. A blocked intake strainer or a clogged first-stage foam causes the same symptoms and costs nothing to fix
  • Limescale on the impeller shaft is the usual culprit in hard water. A soak in a weak vinegar solution sometimes revives an old one
  • A genuine Fluval spare part. Check the model number against your unit before ordering — Fluval part numbers look alike and do not cross over between series
  • Fluval sells these individually so a filter can be repaired rather than replaced, which is usually the cheaper and greener option
  • Keeping a spare impeller and O-ring in the cupboard saves a tank when something fails on a weekend
