Description

The Four Paws Magic Coat Odour Reducing Shampoo For Dogs is a deeper-cleaning shampoo with papaya and oatmeal, aimed at the dog that smells like a dog within a day of being washed.

Key Features

  • 16oz bottle
  • Papaya and oatmeal
  • Deeper cleaning action than the gentle formula
  • Part of the Four Paws Magic Coat range

When A Smell Is A Medical Problem

  • A yeasty, musty, corn-chip smell is usually Malassezia - a yeast overgrowth on the skin. It needs a medicated shampoo from your vet, not a cosmetic one
  • A smell from the ears, with head shaking or scratching, is an ear infection
  • A fishy smell around the back end is usually anal glands
  • If the smell is back within two or three days of a bath, stop buying shampoo and book an appointment

How Often To Bath A Dog

  • Most dogs need bathing once a month at most, and many need it far less. Washing a dog weekly strips the coat and is a common cause of itchy skin
  • A dirty dog is not the same as a smelly dog. A dog that smells persistently after a bath usually has a skin or ear problem rather than a hygiene one
  • Cats almost never need bathing at all. A cat that has stopped keeping itself clean needs a vet, not a bath

Bathing A Dog Properly

  • Brush the coat out before the bath, not after. Water turns a loose tangle into a solid mat
  • Wet right down to the skin before you start. A thick coat sheds water, and shampoo sitting on dry fur does nothing
  • Rinse until the water runs completely clear. Shampoo left in the coat is one of the commonest causes of itching after a bath
  • Dry the coat properly, especially in the ears, the armpits and between the toes. Damp skin under thick fur is where hot spots start

Good To Know

  • Test any new shampoo, conditioner or spray on a small patch of skin and wait a day before using it all over, particularly on a pet that already has sensitive skin
  • Keep shampoo out of the eyes and ears whatever the label says. Tearless means low-sting, not harmless
  • Never use human shampoo on a pet. Dog and cat skin has a different pH and a much thinner outer layer than ours
  • Itchy, flaky or sore skin is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Fleas, mites, food allergy and atopic dermatitis all look similar and none of them is treated by a shampoo alone. See your vet if it does not settle
