• A free-standing gate blocks a route rather than sealing an opening. It works on a dog that respects a barrier and not at all on one that does not
• Nothing touches the walls, so it suits rented flats and odd-shaped openings where a pressure gate will not sit square
• It folds flat and moves room to room, which a fixed gate cannot do
• Being free-standing, it can be pushed over, so it is a boundary rather than a barrier

Three Panels Or Four

• Three covers a narrower gap and is easier to stand steadily. Four spans more and is better across an open room
• Measure the gap before ordering. A free-standing gate that is too narrow simply gets pushed aside
• Both are the same height, so neither will stop a dog that jumps

Where A Gate Should And Should Not Go

• Never use a pressure-mounted gate at the top of a staircase. Pressure gates can be pushed out of the frame, and a gate that gives way at the top of stairs is worse than no gate at all. Hardware-mounted gates are the only safe choice there
