Description

The Frontline Combo Spot-On Flea & Tick Treatment for Cats & Ferrets is a monthly spot-on for cats and ferrets that kills fleas, ticks and biting lice, and stops flea eggs around the house from hatching.

Key Features

  • Three 0.5 ml pipettes, each a single full dose - one pipette treats one cat or one ferret regardless of weight
  • Fipronil 10% w/v kills adult fleas, ticks and biting lice on contact
  • (S)-methoprene 12% w/v stops the eggs and larvae your cat sheds from developing into fleas
  • Works on the skin surface rather than through the bloodstream, so nothing has to bite to be killed
  • For cats over 8 weeks old and over 1 kg, and for ferrets over 6 months
  • No prescription needed

What It Kills, And For How Long

  • Adult fleas die within 24 hours. Protection against new adult fleas runs about four weeks in cats
  • Flea eggs, larvae and pupae are stopped from developing for six weeks - this is the longer figure, and it is about your house rather than your cat
  • Ticks die within 48 hours. In cats, tick cover is up to two weeks; in ferrets, Frontline give up to four
  • It controls biting lice, usually within 48 hours
  • It does not treat worms, ear mites or mange

Four Weeks Or Six - Which Number To Use

  • The two figures measure different things and get mixed up constantly. Four weeks is how long new fleas keep dying on the cat. Six weeks is how long the eggs she drops stay sterile
  • For routine protection, apply monthly. Stretching to six weeks leaves a gap where adult fleas survive on the cat
  • Frontline's own guidance is to apply every month rather than only when you can see fleas

How To Apply It

  • Hold the pipette upright, tap the neck so the liquid drops down, and snap the top off along the scored line
  • Part the coat at the base of the skull until you can see skin, and empty the pipette onto the skin in one spot
  • The base of the skull matters more on a cat than a dog - it is the one place a cat genuinely cannot reach to groom
  • Apply to skin, not fur, and expect a sticky look at the site for up to 24 hours
  • Minimum four weeks between doses

Cats Groom Each Other

  • Treat every cat and dog in the house on the same day. One untreated pet keeps the whole household reinfested, and it is the most common reason a flea treatment looks like it has failed
  • Keep treated cats apart from each other until the sites are properly dry. Cats in the same house groom each other's heads and necks, which is exactly where the product goes
  • If a cat does lick a wet site, it will usually drool heavily for a few minutes because fipronil tastes bitter. Offer water and call your vet if it does not settle quickly
  • Vacuum carpets, rugs and under the furniture, and wash pet bedding at 60C or hotter. Most of a flea population is eggs, larvae and pupae in the house rather than adults on the pet

Bathing

  • Do not bath the cat in the two days after application
  • Once settled, washing or a soaking does not stop it working
  • If you shampoo weekly, Frontline advise shortening the interval - ask the leaflet or your vet for the right gap

Ferrets

  • One full 0.5 ml pipette per ferret, same as a cat, whatever the ferret weighs
  • Not for ferrets under six months old
  • Frontline rate tick cover in ferrets at up to four weeks, longer than in cats

Who Makes It

  • Frontline is a Boehringer Ingelheim brand and has been the reference fipronil spot-on since the 1990s. The actives are long out of patent, which is why so many look-alike pipettes exist
  • These are European packs, printed for the European market

Good To Know

  • This is the Italian-market pack - the box and the leaflet are printed in Italian. The product inside is the standard European Frontline Combo for cats and ferrets
  • Not for kittens under 8 weeks old or under 1 kg. The Frontline pump spray is the one licensed for very young animals
  • Never use a dog pipette on a cat. The dog packs hold up to five times this volume
  • Never use any Frontline product on a rabbit. Fipronil can cause severe reactions in rabbits, including death. The same caution applies to guinea pigs and other small pets unless your vet has said otherwise
  • Frontline state it can be used as part of a treatment strategy for flea allergy dermatitis. It is one part of that plan rather than the whole of it - FAD needs a vet involved
  • Flammable. Keep the product, and the animal you have just treated, away from naked flames, heaters and other sources of heat
  • Avoid getting it on your fingers, and wash your hands with soap and water if you do. It can irritate skin, eyes and mucous membranes, so do not smoke, eat or drink while you are applying it
  • Keep out of the reach and sight of children, and keep children away from the treated animal until the application site is dry
  • Fipronil is harmful to aquatic life. Do not contaminate ponds, waterways or ditches, and do not let a treated animal swim in open water for two days after application
  • Not for an animal that is ill or recovering from illness. Check with your vet first if your pet is unwell, very old, or on other medication
  • Sold without a prescription, but it is still a veterinary medicine. If the itching does not settle, or there are bald patches, scabs or sore skin, get a vet to look rather than repeating treatments
  • Read the leaflet inside the pack before you use it. What is here is a summary, not a replacement for it
