The Furrish Nail Clipper for Dogs is a stainless steel nail clipper with a rubber grip - the tool for keeping nails short enough that they are not catching on carpet and splitting.

Key Features

  • Sharp stainless steel blades for a clean cut rather than a crush
  • Rubber grip handle for control, which matters more than power here
  • Sized for dogs
  • Designed for taking a safe amount off at a time
  • This item is currently out of stock

Where The Quick Is, And How Not To Hit It

  • Inside every nail is the quick - a core of blood vessel and nerve. Cutting it hurts and bleeds, and one bad experience can make a dog refuse to have its feet touched for years
  • On a pale nail you can see it as a pink triangle. Stop well short of it
  • On a black nail you cannot see anything, so take thin slices off the tip and look at the cut face after each one. When a small grey or pink oval appears in the centre, stop immediately - that is the quick coming
  • Cut at roughly 45 degrees, following the natural angle of the nail tip
  • Do not forget the dew claws on the inside of the legs. They touch nothing and so they never wear down, and they are the ones that curl round into the pad

Little And Often

  • The quick grows forward as the nail does. If nails are already long, you cannot fix it in one session - trim a small amount weekly and the quick recedes over a few weeks
  • The target is nails that do not touch the floor when the dog is standing. If you can hear clicking on tiles, they are too long
  • Long nails are not only a snagging risk. They change how a dog loads its feet, which over time affects the toes, the wrists and the whole posture

Before You Start

  • Keep styptic powder in the same drawer as the clippers. If you do catch the quick, firm pressure and styptic powder stops it quickly
  • Do one nail a day if that is what it takes. There is no prize for doing all eighteen in one sitting
  • Pair it with a treat every single time, especially early on
  • If your dog genuinely will not allow it, a groomer or vet nurse will do it in two minutes. That is a better outcome than a fight

Who Makes It

  • Furrish is a UK dog grooming range built for home use rather than for salons - the kit you would want between professional appointments
  • The range covers the whole routine: brushes and combs, shampoos, a detangler, wipes, colognes, a towel and clippers

Good To Know

  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Stop if you catch the quick - apply styptic powder and firm pressure, and call the vet if the bleeding does not settle
  • Do not use it on a split, cracked or obviously painful nail. That needs a vet
  • Wipe the blades dry after use
