• Rinse it under the tap before it goes in, and have a look for sharp edges or casting flash on any moulded piece.
• Keep decor clear of the filter intake and the heater. Blocking either is how a tidy layout quietly becomes a problem.
• Build so it cannot collapse. Anything stacked in a tank should still be stable if a large fish swims into it, or if you nudge it with a siphon.
• Scrub algae off under the tap with a brush and plain water. No detergent, ever, on anything going back in a tank.
