When Eggfood Earns Its Place

• Three situations, and outside them most birds do not need it: a pair feeding chicks, a bird part-way through a heavy moult, and a bird picking up after illness.
• Growing feathers is expensive and feeding chicks is more so. Protein is the thing a seed diet is short of, and egg is an easy way to add it.
• This is a complementary food. It goes alongside the daily diet rather than replacing it.
• Outside those windows, a small amount once or twice a week is plenty. Daily eggfood on top of a full seed bowl is simply a fatter bird.

Serving It Without Making Anyone Ill

• Soft food spoils fast, and in this climate very fast. Mix only what will be eaten in a couple of hours, take out what is left, and wash the dish rather than topping it up.
• Mix it with a little water to a crumbly texture rather than a paste, unless the pack says otherwise.
• Use a shallow separate dish, not the seed bowl. Damp food in with dry seed spoils the seed too.
• In a Gulf summer, two hours is a sensible outside limit for anything damp in a cage. Morning feeding works better than evening for that reason.

Good To Know

• Worth being clear, because eggfood is often misunderstood: this is a soft food fed in small amounts and it is not a primary diet. If you want a daily mix for a parrot, ask us for the seed range instead.
• It is a soft, crumbly food rather than a crunchy one. If you were after large crunchy morsels, that is the Gourmet mix.
• Keep the pack sealed, dry and out of the sun, and look at it before you use it. Anything musty, caked or webbed goes in the bin.
• If a bird is actually unwell - quiet, fluffed up, sitting on the cage floor or not eating - that is a vet the same day. Birds hide illness until they cannot, and by the time it shows there is not much time.
