Schesir Sterilised and Light Chicken Dry Cat Food - 10 kg

Schesir Sterilised and Light Chicken Dry Cat Food - 10 kg is a complete and balanced dry food for neutered adult cats in a 10 kg sack, with chicken as the single animal protein source.

Key Features

• Chicken as the single animal protein source: The brand's claim for this recipe.
• Reduced fat and increased fibre: The brand's stated mechanism for holding a neutered cat's weight.
• A 10 kg sack: The largest dry format we carry from Schesir. This is a multi-cat or a cattery purchase rather than a single-cat one.
• No added colourings or preservatives: The brand's claim across its dry food.
• Made in Italy: As with the rest of the Schesir range we carry, apart from Born Carnivore, which is made in Canada.

This Recipe Lists Pork Fat

• The 1.5 kg of this same recipe publishes its full composition and pork fat is in it. This listing does not publish one, so that is where the fact comes from, and we would rather tell you than let you find out at home.
• It is pork fat rather than pork meat, and it is there as a fat source rather than as the meat in the recipe. That does not change what it is.
• It is also why the single-animal-protein claim on this range still holds: that claim is about the protein, and this is a fat.
• If pork is something your household avoids, tell us and we will show you what else we carry that does the same job. There are plenty of options and it is no trouble to find them.

This One Is Not Grain-Free, And That Is Fine

• The 1.5 kg of this same recipe publishes a composition, and it lists rice, barley and corn gluten. This listing does not publish one, so that is where this comes from. This is a cereal-based kibble and we are not going to dress it up as anything else.
• Grain only matters if your cat actually reacts to it, and most do not. Where it matters, Schesir's Natural Selection range is grain-free and gluten-free, and the Born Carnivore range is grain-free as well.
• Corn gluten is worth one more word, because it is a protein from a plant. The single-protein claim on this range means one animal protein, which is a narrower promise than it first reads as. For an elimination diet that distinction is the whole thing.

What A Sterilised Formula Actually Changes

• Less fat and more fibre than the equivalent maintenance food. That is the whole mechanism, and Schesir states it in exactly those terms.
• A neutered cat needs fewer calories for the same body weight, so the usual outcome of feeding it the ordinary food at the ordinary portion is a slow gain over a year or two.
• The food helps. The portion decides. Tell us your cat's weight and whether it is neutered and we will work out what it should actually be getting a day, which is worth more than the words on the bag.

A Complete Food, Unlike Schesir's Complements Line

• Complete and balanced, so this can be the whole diet.
• Worth saying because Schesir also sells a Complements line, which is a complementary food by its own label and carries a two-servings-a-day ceiling. The names are similar and the consequence is not.

A Dry Food Carries Almost No Water

• That is the convenience and it is also the catch. A cat on dry food alone has to drink the difference, and a great many cats do not drink enough.
• Put water in more than one place, away from the food bowl, and consider one wet meal a day alongside. In this climate it is the cheapest insurance against urinary trouble there is.
• Reseal the bag and keep it out of the kitchen heat. Fat in a dry food goes off, and an opened bag here goes stale faster than the date on it suggests.

Good To Know

• Mix a new dry food into the old one over a week or so rather than swapping the bowl in one go. Cats object to change and a sudden switch loosens most of them.
• 10 kg is too much for one cat. An opened bag of dry food goes stale here in weeks rather than months, so unless you are feeding several, the 1.5 kg is the better buy even at a worse price per kilogram.
• The 1.5 kg is listed here as a separate product rather than as a size on this page. Ask us and we will quote whichever works out cheaper.
• Ask us for the composition and the analysis and we will photograph them. Most of the Schesir dry cat foods do not publish theirs, and the front of a bag is not enough to compare two foods on.
