Before You Give A Dog This One

• A shank is a weight-bearing bone, which makes it one of the hardest things you can give a dog. A dog that has cracked a tooth before, or that has had dental work, should not have one.
• Supervise it and take it away when the ends start to splinter or when what is left could be swallowed. That point always comes.
• Feed it outdoors or on something washable. It is a real bone and it will leave a mark on a carpet.
• Do not leave it lying about between sessions in this heat. Marrow goes rancid, and a bone left out in a warm room is the part of this that actually makes a dog ill. Give it, then take it away and bag it.
