Cat Litter Types: Bentonite vs Tofu vs Crystal (UAE Guide)
Bentonite, tofu, crystal or plant-based? A plain-English guide to every type of cat litter for UAE homes: how each one works, odour and dust, weight, kittens, and how often to change it.

Walk down any cat litter aisle in Dubai and you will find four very different materials sold under the same name: bentonite clay, tofu, silica crystals and plant fibres. They clump differently, weigh differently, smell different after a week in a warm flat, and get thrown away differently. This guide explains each type of cat litter in plain terms, compares them side by side, and shows how to pick the right one for an air-conditioned UAE home.
Which cat litter should you buy?
If you only read one section, read this one. Match your situation to the type:
- Most adult cats, one or two cats: clumping bentonite cat litter. It forms hard clumps you can scoop daily, and it is the type most cats accept first time.
- Light to carry, low dust, plant-based: tofu or soya litter. It clumps well and weighs a fraction of clay.
- Longest time between full changes: silica crystal litter. It absorbs urine rather than clumping it and locks in smell well.
- Biodegradable and natural: wood, cellulose or bamboo litter from our natural cat litter range.
- Kittens under about four months: a soft, unscented, non-clay kitten litter such as Sanicat Kitten Litter.
You can browse every option in our cat litter collection. The sections below explain the trade-offs behind each recommendation.
Bentonite clumping cat litter
Bentonite is a natural clay that swells when it gets wet. When your cat urinates, the granules bind into a firm clump that you lift out with a scoop, leaving the rest of the tray clean. That is why bentonite is the most popular cat litter in the UAE and around the world.
Why owners choose it
- Tight, hard clumps make daily scooping quick and thorough.
- Fine, sand-like texture that most cats like to dig in.
- Good value: you only remove what is soiled, so a bag goes further.
What to watch for
- It is heavy. A 10 kg bag is a real carry from the car park to a high-floor flat.
- Cheaper clays can be dusty. Look for "low dust" or "dust free" on the bag if anyone at home has allergies.
- It is mined clay, so it is not biodegradable. Bag it and put it in general waste.
Brands we stock: Lindocat white and natural bentonite, Sanicat, Northland, Meow Mates, Kitty Choice, Canada Litter, Flamingo and Thunder Paws. For multi-cat homes, look at the multi-cat formulas such as Lindocat Advanced Multi-Cat+.
Tofu and soya cat litter
Tofu cat litter is made from soybean fibre, the by-product left after making tofu, pressed into short pellets or strips. It clumps when wet, like bentonite, but it is far lighter and produces very little dust.
Why owners choose it
- Lightweight: a 7 litre bag is easy to carry and pour.
- Low dust and low tracking, because the pellets are larger than clay granules.
- Plant-based and biodegradable.
What to watch for
- Some cats dislike the larger pellet texture at first, so switch gradually (see below).
- Many packs say "flushable", but we recommend binning it. Older pipes and building drainage in many UAE towers do not cope well with litter, and a blockage costs far more than a bin bag.
- Clumps can soften if left too long in humid weather. Scoop at least once a day.
Brands we stock: Bioline Tofu (several fragrances, plus a tofu-and-bentonite blend), Kit Cat Soya Clump, M-PETS Soya Organic and Thunder Paws Eco-Fresh Tofu.
Crystal (silica gel) cat litter
Crystal cat litter is made of silica gel beads, the same material as the small "do not eat" sachets found in new shoes. Instead of clumping, the crystals soak up urine and hold the moisture inside. You scoop out solids daily, stir the crystals, and change the whole tray when they are saturated.
Why owners choose it
- Strong odour control, which matters in a closed, air-conditioned apartment.
- Very low dust.
- Fewer full changes than most clay litters, and lighter to carry.
What to watch for
- The crunchy texture puts some cats off. Mix it in slowly.
- Most crystal litters do not clump, so urine stays in the tray until the full change.
- Not suitable for kittens that may chew or eat litter.
Brands we stock: Kit Cat Classic Crystal, Lindocat Crystal, Clear Choice (with colour-change indicator crystals), M-PETS Fresh Diamonds and Fresh Magic. Flamingo also makes a fine-grain silica that clumps.
Wood, cellulose and other plant-based litters
Plant-based cat litter covers wood fibre, recycled cellulose (paper), bamboo and similar materials. Some clump and some do not, so read the label.
- Cat's Best uses plant wood fibres. The Original and Smart Pellets versions both clump, and they are light and low dust.
- Sanicat Clean & Green is a cellulose litter: soft, absorbent and gentle on paws, good after surgery or for cats with sensitive feet.
- M-Pets Bamboo and Lindocat Lovable Nature are biodegradable options for owners who want to avoid clay.
Plant litters are the most eco-friendly choice and usually the lightest. The trade-off is that clumps are softer than bentonite, so a good scoop and daily cleaning matter more. See the full biodegradable cat litter range.

Choosing cat litter for a UAE home
Life with a cat in the UAE is mostly indoors, with the windows shut and the AC running for much of the year. That changes what matters:
- Odour builds faster in warm, closed rooms. Choose a fast-clumping bentonite or a crystal litter and scoop every day. No litter can make up for a tray left for three days.
- Dust stays in the air. AC recirculates the same air, so low-dust litters (tofu, crystal, premium bentonite) are worth paying a little more for.
- Humidity affects clumps. In the humid months, plant and tofu litters can soften faster. Keep the bag sealed and away from the bathroom.
- Scented or unscented? Strong perfumes can put sensitive cats off the tray. If your cat starts going elsewhere, try an unscented cat litter first. If you prefer a fragrance, our scented cat litter range has lighter options.
- Heavy bags and high floors. Order online and have it delivered to your door instead of carrying 10 to 20 kg bags from the shop.
Kittens explore with their mouths, so avoid clumping clay and crystals until about four months. Use a soft kitten litter in a low-sided tray. Our kitten starter checklist covers the rest of the shopping list.
How much cat litter you need, and how often to change it
Depth
Fill the tray to about 5 to 7 cm. Too shallow and clumps stick to the base; too deep and you waste litter and your cat scatters it.
Litres versus kilos
Cat litter is sold by volume (litres) or by weight (kg), which makes comparing bags confusing. Bentonite is dense, so a litre weighs roughly 0.6 to 0.8 kg. For example, our Meow Mates 25 L bag holds 20 kg of bentonite. Tofu, crystal and plant litters are much lighter per litre, so a 7 L bag of tofu weighs only a few kilos.
How often to change it
| Type | Daily | Full change (one cat) |
|---|---|---|
| Bentonite clumping | Scoop clumps and solids, top up | Every 2 to 3 weeks |
| Tofu / plant clumping | Scoop clumps and solids, top up | Every 2 to 3 weeks |
| Silica crystal | Remove solids, stir crystals | When saturated, often 3 to 4 weeks |
| Non-clumping clay | Remove solids | Every week |
Wash the tray with mild, unscented soap at every full change. With more than one cat, follow the "one tray per cat, plus one" rule. Our cat litter box guide compares covered, top-entry and self-cleaning trays, or browse cat litter boxes and trays and scoops.
How to switch cat litter without upsetting your cat
Cats are creatures of habit, and a sudden change of litter is one of the most common reasons they stop using the tray. Change over slowly:
- Days 1 to 3: mix about one quarter new litter into three quarters of the old.
- Days 4 to 6: move to half and half.
- Days 7 to 10: three quarters new, then all new.
If your cat strains, goes often with little output, or there is blood in the urine, see a vet the same day. These are signs of a urinary problem, not a litter preference, and male cats in particular can become seriously ill quickly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between bentonite and tofu cat litter?
Bentonite is a natural clay that forms hard clumps and is heavy and not biodegradable. Tofu litter is made from soybean fibre; it also clumps, but it is much lighter, lower in dust and biodegradable. Bentonite is cheaper per tray; tofu is easier to carry and kinder to indoor air.
Is crystal cat litter better than clumping litter?
Neither is better for every home. Crystal litter controls odour very well and needs fewer full changes, but most crystals do not clump and some cats dislike the texture. Clumping litter is easier to keep clean day to day and suits most cats.
Can I flush tofu cat litter in the UAE?
Many packs say it is flushable, but we recommend putting it in the bin. Building drainage in many UAE towers and villas is not designed for litter, and a blocked pipe is expensive to fix.
How much does 25 litres of cat litter weigh?
It depends on the material. Bentonite clay weighs roughly 0.6 to 0.8 kg per litre, so 25 L is about 15 to 20 kg; our Meow Mates 25 L bag weighs 20 kg. Tofu, crystal and plant litters are much lighter for the same volume.
Which cat litter is safe for kittens?
For kittens under about four months, use a soft, unscented, non-clumping kitten litter in a low-sided tray. Avoid clumping clay and silica crystals until they stop trying to eat litter.
