  • A backup air pump is cheap insurance: in a power cut, oxygen in a stocked tank can drop to dangerous levels within hours.
  • Test the battery backup every few months by unplugging the pump.
  • Place the pump above the water line or fit a check valve, so water can't siphon back into it.
  • Leave a drip loop in every power cable, so water running down the cord drips off before it reaches the socket.
